Over a third of TSA officers call out at 3 major U.S. airports in single day as funding standoff continues
A funding dispute in Washington has left TSA officers unpaid, causing over 40% absenteeism at major airports and resulting in long security lines and checkpoint closures.
- Nationwide, 2,700 Transportation Security Administration officers—roughly 10% of the workforce—called out on Tuesday amid a Department of Homeland Security funding standoff that has left employees without pay.
- Democrats in Congress refused to fund DHS until it implements immigration reforms, including prohibiting masks and allowing independent misconduct investigations, while President Donald Trump and Republican allies rejected those demands.
- At Houston's William P. Hobby Airport, 40.8% of TSA workers called out Tuesday, while nearly 36% of officers were absent in New Orleans and upward of 34% in Atlanta.
- TSA Acting Deputy Administrator Adam Stahl warned that if call-out rates climb, "there could be scenarios where we may have to shut down airports," describing the situation as "serious."
- On Thursday, Department of Transportation Chief Sean Duffy warned that current airport chaos "is going to look like child's play" if the shutdown is not remedied soon.
