Over 80 migrants are missing from a boat that capsized after leaving Libya, UN says

- On Tuesday, the International Organization for Migration reported that more than 80 migrants are missing after their boat capsized in the Central Mediterranean. About 120 people had departed from Tajoura, Libya, on Sunday.
- Libya has served as a primary transit point for migrants fleeing conflict and poverty in Africa and the Middle East since the 2011 ousting of Moammar Gadhafi. Instability continues to drive these crossings.
- A merchant vessel and a tugboat rescued 32 people, while authorities recovered two bodies. The Italian coast guard transferred survivors to Lampedusa, Europe's primary entry point for migrants crossing from North Africa.
- The IOM said Tuesday that at least 990 deaths have been recorded so far this year, marking the deadliest start since 2014. In the Central Mediterranean alone, 765 deaths represent a 150% increase over the same period last year.
- IOM Director General Amy Pope noted earlier this month that the agency is seeing growing numbers of migrants from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Sudan. War and instability continue to drive these crossings.
