Over 80 migrants are missing from a boat that capsized after leaving Libya, UN says
The IOM said 32 people were rescued and at least 2 bodies recovered as Mediterranean crossings hit 990 deaths this year.
- On Tuesday, the International Organization for Migration reported that more than 80 migrants are missing after their boat capsized in the Central Mediterranean. About 120 people had departed from Tajoura, Libya, on Sunday.
- Libya has served as a primary transit point for migrants fleeing conflict and poverty across Africa and the Middle East since the 2011 ousting of Moammar Gadhafi. Instability and lack of food continue driving these crossings.
- A merchant vessel and a tugboat rescued 32 people, while authorities recovered two bodies. The Italian coast guard transferred survivors to Lampedusa, the primary entry point to Europe for Mediterranean crossings.
- At least 990 deaths have been recorded so far this year, the deadliest start since 2014, according to the IOM. In the Central Mediterranean alone, 765 people died, a 150% increase from last year.
- IOM Director General Amy Pope noted earlier this month that the agency is seeing growing numbers of migrants from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Sudan. War, instability, and lack of food are driving these dangerous journeys.
