The M23 offensive has displaced over 500,000 people and killed more than 400 civilians in eastern DRC, expanding rebel control despite a recent peace deal.
- On Thursday, M23 armed group consolidated control of Uvira, South Kivu province, after saying it seized the city on Wednesday; local residents spent the previous day taking cover amid sporadic gunfire.
- US-Mediated peace agreement signed last week excluded M23, which is negotiating separately after agreeing earlier this year to a ceasefire; United States and United Nations experts accuse Rwanda of backing M23, while Rwanda denies the allegation and acknowledged troops and missile systems last year.
- More than 413 civilians were killed between Uvira and Bukavu, including women, children and young people, while regional officials report Rwandan special forces and foreign mercenaries violate the ceasefire.
- The offensive has displaced 200,000 civilians and adds to a broader crisis that has driven more than seven million people from their homes, while the US Embassy in Kinshasa urged M23 and Rwandan troops to cease operations and withdraw.
- More than 100 armed groups contest the mineral-rich eastern DRC, with UN estimating M23 has about 6,500 fighters, escalating the regional crisis near Uvira and Bujumbura, Burundi.
