Out-of-Control Truck Kills 13 Devotees at Hindu Festival in India, Officials Say

The truck broke through barricades and hit devotees at the temple, leaving 12 dead and several others injured, police said.

  • Late Saturday night, a truck crashed into pilgrims gathered near the Sheetla Mata Temple in Gwalior, killing 12 people after breaking through a police checkpoint during Navratri.
  • According to Gwalior Senior Superintendent of Police Dharmveer Singh, the paddy-laden truck lost control on a steep slope while travelling from the Chhinor direction. Authorities are investigating how it bypassed barricades restricting heavy traffic.
  • The SSP reported that 39 people were taken to the hospital, of whom 12 died. Gwalior Collector Ruchika Chauhan noted 29 others sustained injuries, with five to six patients in critical condition.
  • Collector Chauhan dispatched ambulances and relief vehicles immediately after the crash. Medical teams are continuously performing X-rays and CT scans to ensure proper treatment alignment for those with fractures and minor injuries.
  • Authorities have deployed an RTO team to conduct a mechanical inspection of the truck to identify the specific issue that caused the vehicle to veer off course and strike the temple's outer wall and gate.
