'You Can't Die Like This': Flydubai Pilot Recalls Attack in First TV Interview
Machchhar said one pilot prayed while another took over the controls as he fought to stay conscious and protect passengers.
In an interview with Sky News Arabia, Flydubai Captain Smit Machchhar recounted a terrifying assault that became a fight for survival, with passengers' safety weighing heavily on his mind throughout the ordeal.
During the incident, Machchhar recalled being struck hard on the head while performing his duties, an impact severe enough to leave him drifting in and out of consciousness.
When the cabin door opened, Machchhar remembered being face down amid widespread panic. "When the door was open, it was a completely different scene. I remember being face down, and of course, the panic which was there, the screaming which was there," he recalled.
Machchhar credited a fellow pilot with taking over the aircraft's controls during the crisis, describing the intervention as something he would "keep with me till I die."
The Israeli President honored Machchhar for his actions, calling him "A hero to India, Israel and the world" in recognition of his courage when the situation demanded intervention.
