Ottawa lends Millar Western Lumber $100M to cope with tariff impacts
The loan is part of a $10-billion federal tariff facility and is meant to help Millar Western protect about 420 jobs.
On Monday, Finance Canada announced a $100-million loan to Millar Western Lumber Products to help the exporter navigate trade uncertainty and steep United States tariffs.
Global trade disputes have compounded the impact of steep United States tariffs on Canadian forest products, leaving the domestic softwood lumber industry struggling.
Millar Western operates three mills across Alberta and British Columbia, employing 420 workers; Ottawa says the funding will support near-term needs like rebuilding log inventory and protecting jobs.
The $10-billion Large Enterprise Tariff Loan facility is also supporting Ontario's Algoma Steel, which used the capital to retool production away from United States customers.
British Columbia wood manufacturers describe the United States-Canada lumber dispute as a "broken process," highlighting ongoing challenges faced by firms navigating volatile market conditions.
