Boards Come up at Haridwar’s Har Ki Pauri Barring Entry of Non-Hindus
The Ganga Sabha cited a 1916 bylaw to restrict non-Hindu entry at Haridwar’s Har-ki-Pauri, sparking political debate and demands to extend the ban to all 105 Ganga ghats.
- On Friday, the Shri Ganga Sabha installed hoardings and banners at Har-ki-Pauri, Haridwar, Uttarakhand, barring non-Hindus from entry at the religious site.
- Citing a 1916 Municipal Bylaw enacted under Pt Madan Mohan Malviya, Nitin Gautam, Ganga Sabha chief, said the step preserves Har-ki-Pauri's sanctity amid rising visitor numbers.
- Gautam stated, `The 1916 Municipal Bylaw clearly states that no non-Hindu can enter the Har Ki Pauri area,` a demand long made by sadhus and priests, backed by religious leaders.
- The posters triggered a row on Friday, with Opposition figures calling the move unconstitutional, while Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said the Uttarakhand state government is reviewing laws and consulting stakeholders, and Haridwar Municipal Corporation town commissioner Nandan Kumar noted no directive was issued.
- With the 2027 Kumbh approaching, critics warned enforcement is impractical since Kumbh limits extend to Roorkee and Jwalapur, which have sizable non-Hindu populations, and cited Constitutionally protected travel rights.
