Despite strong interference from Turkey, 63 percent of the voters in the Turkish-occupied northern Cyprus voted for the social democratic opposition candidate Tufan Erhürman in the presidential election on Sunday.
Tufan Erhürman is a centre-left and pro-European politician, in favour of a federal solution for the island that has been divided for more than 40 years.
