Apple Loses Another Top Executive to OpenAI
Paul Meade will join OpenAI’s hardware unit as it builds AI-first devices, while Apple shifts Vision Pro duties to his deputy.
Apple vice president Paul Meade is set to leave the company by next week to join OpenAI's hardware unit, Bloomberg reported.
Meade's departure follows a controversial shake-up of Apple's hardware engineering unit initiated in recent weeks by chief hardware officer Johny Srouji after John Ternus's appointment as Apple's next CEO.
Meade led the Apple Vision Pro hardware engineering team for seven years and previously served as a key iPad manager in 2010 before becoming head of iPhone program management in 2012.
With Meade's exit, responsibilities as head of the Vision Products Group will transition to Fletcher Rothkopf, his longtime deputy overseeing product design for the Vision Pro and smart glasses efforts.
At OpenAI, Meade will develop an upcoming family of AI-powered devices alongside former Apple designers working with Jony Ive through the io subsidiary to build AI-first hardware.
