Work Begins on Road in Northwestern Ontario to Help ‘Unlock’ Ring of Fire
The $80 million project will rebuild nearly 5 kilometres of roadway and redesign downtown to handle future mine traffic more safely.
- On Tuesday, Greenstone Mayor Jamie McPherson marked the start of the $81.3-million Main Street Rehabilitation Project, which will prepare the roadway for heavy industrial traffic anticipated from Ring of Fire mining developments.
- Minister of Indigenous Affairs and First Nations Economic Reconciliation Greg Rickford described the five-kilometre corridor as a "corridor to prosperity," vital for connecting the Trans-Canada Highway to remote northern mineral deposits.
- First Nation-owned partnership Minodahmun Development LP secured the construction contract for the three-year project, which Greenstone CAO Mark Wright said involves "digging everything out, replacing all of the surfaces underneath, replacing the road base, improving drainage, and putting on a new surface."
- Construction will cause water and wastewater service disruptions, with Greenstone officials advising residents to check the municipality's website for updates while the redesign aims to improve traffic safety through the community.
- The province promotes the Ring of Fire as a "once-in-a-generation opportunity" that could create more than 70,000 jobs and add $22 billion to the economy over 30 years, with all road sections expected open by 2030.
