Only followers of 'Sanatan Dharma' will touch Durga idols during immersion: Suvendu
Adhikari said 18 IPS officers and the National Disaster Response Force will oversee immersions after a stampede killed 19 people.
On Wednesday, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced that only followers of 'Sanatan Dharma' may touch Durga idols during immersions in the Hooghly River, asserting that religious traditions must be followed.
Security has been intensified across Kolkata following a stampede at the Chorbagan Durga Puja pandal on Mahasaptami evening, which claimed 19 lives, prompting enhanced oversight measures.
To "maintain the purity of the immersion," Adhikari said the administration introduced trolleys instead of cranes and deployed the National Disaster Response Force to assist with arrangements.
The Chief Minister expressed concern regarding spectator safety in Taki, where at least 200 country boats were expected to carry crowds on the Ichamati river during immersion.
A total of 18 IPS officers will supervise immersion activities in Kolkata, Howrah, Barrackpore, and Chandannagar through October 24, with officials including Gaurav Sharma and Indra Chakraborty overseeing ghat logistics.
