Onion Prices Rise Nearly 50%: Govt to Run Kanda Express From Today

- On Monday, the Centre began transporting bulk onion stocks from Nashik, Maharashtra, via dedicated railway rakes dubbed the "Kanda Express" to major consumption centres, aiming to contain a 59 per cent year-on-year retail price surge.
- The government maintains a 1.21 lakh tonne buffer stock, a strategic reserve managed by NAFED and the NCCF under the Price Stabilisation Fund to cushion markets against seasonal price spikes typically seen during August and September.
- All-India retail prices rose 59 per cent to ₹43.53/kg on August 24, with Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare noting that high mandi prices in Nashik suggest "cartelisation and speculation" are affecting the market.
- Khare expects the rail shipments to reach Chennai, Madurai, Delhi, Ernakulam, and Guwahati by Wednesday, where onions will be sold at ₹35/kg through retail markets.
- Government officials are monitoring prices closely to decide on further interventions, with plans to expand supply to additional destinations based on emerging market requirements.
