One runner gored in the face at Spain’s San Fermin bull run festival
A black bull broke from the pack early in the 875-meter run and struck one runner, while 12 others needed hospital treatment.
On Saturday, a runner was gored in the face during the fifth morning run of the San Fermin festival in Pamplona. A black bull from Jose Escolar's herd broke from the pack, striking the participant during the 875-meter sprint.
This year marks 100 years since Ernest Hemingway published 'The Sun Also Rises,' which propelled the San Fermin festival to international fame. Six fighting bulls and steers now charge through narrow cobblestone streets annually.
Twelve people required medical treatment at the University of Navarra Hospital for various knocks following the two-and-a-half-minute run. Many runners suffered pileups as the massive animals knocked bodies to the cobblestones.
Most participants avoided serious injury as bulls shoved runners aside rather than goring them. The animals were guided to the bull ring, where bullfighters will kill them later in the day.
Northern Spain hosted the fifth morning run of the eight-day festival on Saturday. Thrill-seekers continue to pack the narrow course despite inherent risks, maintaining the historic tradition.
