Death Toll From B.C. Fishing Charter Sinking Rises as Woman Dies in Hospital
Investigators are weighing specialized recovery methods after finding the vessel 153 metres down, with six people still missing and presumed drowned.
- On Wednesday, the Richmond RCMP confirmed the sunken Big Coast charter boat was located 153 metres below the surface, while one of four rescued passengers died in hospital, raising the suspected death toll to seven.
- Ten people were aboard the Top Vancouver Fishing Charter Inc. vessel when it capsized near Roberts Bank on June 28, leaving six individuals missing and presumed drowned.
- The RCMP Underwater Recovery Team used a remotely operated vehicle to locate the vessel, but "significant depth, darkness and underwater conditions" limited interior examinations, and searches found no occupants on the surrounding seabed.
- Investigators are now evaluating "specialized recovery options" while working with Transport Canada and the Transportation Safety Board to determine factors contributing to the tragedy.
- After finalizing next-of-kin notifications, the RCMP is requesting privacy for families and seeking information from anyone who traveled on previous voyages involving the Big Coast.
