Johnson, Wilson Get Chippy in Debate While Pushing Their Version of ‘New’ for SC
The candidates sparred over Medicaid expansion, surveillance camera data and fentanyl policy as they pitched competing plans for South Carolina.
On Tuesday, Attorney General Alan Wilson and State Representative Jermaine Johnson squared off in a gubernatorial debate in Columbia, S.C., clashing over Flock cameras, Medicaid expansion, and hate crime legislation.
As South Carolina prepares to elect its first new governor in a decade, candidates addressed pressing issues including education, health care, infrastructure, and fentanyl-related crime.
Wilson challenged Johnson's legislative record, noting he sponsored 70 bills with zero passage; Johnson countered by invoking the Scott Spivey case and questioning a $75 million legal fee payment.
Candidates diverged sharply on Medicaid expansion and LGBTQIA+ hate crime legislation, with South Carolina remaining one of two states lacking state-based hate crime laws.
Election Day is set for Tuesday, Nov. 3, with early voting in South Carolina running from Oct. 19 through Oct. 31.
