- On Feb. 6, U.S. Secret Service agents arrested Shannon Mathre in Toledo after a federal grand jury returned an indictment charging him with threatening to kill U.S. Vice President JD Vance, the Department of Justice said.
- Prosecutors said the alleged threat targeted Vance during his Jan. 22 Toledo appearance, with investigators seizing Mathre's Samsung phone on Jan. 21 as part of the probe.
- The indictment quoted Mathre saying `I am going to find out where he is going to be and use my M14 automatic gun and kill him,` and authorities found child sexual abuse materials on his devices during the investigation.
- In federal court on Feb. 6, Mathre pleaded not guilty in Toledo, and Magistrate Judge Darrell Clay ordered his detention until a Feb. 11 hearing; prosecutors say the child sexual abuse materials charge carries a 20-year maximum sentence.
- Amid growing concern about political violence, U.S. Attorney David M. Toepfer and Secret Service agent Matthew Schierloh said threats will not be tolerated, while Attorney General Pamela Bondi vowed vigorous prosecution as experts warn of rising violence in recent years.
