NYC’s Rikers Island jail hosts World Cup watch party for inmates
More than 100 inmates watched the England-Argentina semifinal as the jail used tournament parties to reward 30 days of incident-free behavior.
More than 100 inmates watched the England vs. Argentina World Cup semifinal on Wednesday at Rikers Island, a facility better known for violence than social events.
Since the tournament kicked off last month, the jail has hosted about 90 watch parties for roughly 6,600 inmates on the 400-acre island, offering a rare respite from confinement.
One inmate predicted Argentina would defeat England and advance to face Spain, which had beaten France the day earlier. Victor Caldas, a 39-year-old who has been incarcerated four months, celebrated Argentina's 2-1 lead in stoppage time.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a professed Morocco fan, attended the watch party and sat at tables chatting with inmates. Correction Commissioner Stanley Richards said, "Programs like this equal safety in our jail."
About 4,500 of the roughly 6,600 inmates have participated in tournament events so far. The watch parties reflect efforts to provide inmates with moments of normalcy despite the facility's documented dysfunction and violence.
