- On July 25, the New York City Health Department began investigating a Legionnaires' disease cluster in Central Harlem after detecting one death and 22 diagnoses.
- Health experts note it stems from Legionella bacteria that grow in warm water, often linked to cooling towers, showers, and hot tubs, especially in hot, humid weather, Dr. Celia Quinn said.
- On Monday afternoon, the New York City Health Department reported eight cases in ZIP codes 10027, 10030, 10035, and 10037, with cases also in 10039.
- To curb the outbreak, the New York City Health Department sampled all operable cooling towers in the investigation area and instructed owners with initial positive screening results to initiate remediation within 24 hours.
- Health officials warn that, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, between 8,000 and 18,000 people are hospitalized annually with Legionnaires' disease, and at-risk individuals should seek care soon.
