Nurse’s heroic act in Bondi Junction massacre
The veteran nurse helped two stabbed security officers and later said she would make the same choice again.
Governor-General Sam Mostyn announced on Saturday that Nurse Catherine Molihan will receive a Commendation for Brave Conduct for her actions during the 2024 Bondi Junction attack.
Joel Cauchi murdered six people during a six-minute rampage at Westfield Bondi Junction on April 13, 2024; Cauchi, who lived with schizophrenia and was "floridly psychotic," was fatally shot by police officer Amy Scott.
Molihan, an ICU-trained nurse with more than 25 years experience, insisted on leaving a secure shop to treat security guards Muhammad Taha and Faraz Tahir, who sustained critical injuries.
Seven others, including Detective Inspector Amy Scott and the late Tahir, are also recognized on the Australian Bravery Decorations honours list for their "valour, compassion and service" on that day.
Monday marks the second anniversary of the tragedy, which left 12 people injured; Molihan said she is "humbled" by the gesture, though the award is "shrouded in overwhelming sadness.
