Number of asylum hotels falls to 185 after 11 close
Ministers said the closures will save nearly £65 million a year as asylum seekers move to larger, more basic accommodation sites.
- On Tuesday, April 14, ministers confirmed 11 asylum hotels will close, reducing total sites to 185 from a peak of around 400 under the previous Conservative government.
- Borders Minister Alex Norris stated hotel use had "spiralled out of control, costing taxpayers billions and dumping the consequences on local communities" despite being intended as temporary accommodation.
- The government projects annual savings of nearly £65 million, with 350 people already relocated to the Crowborough military barracks in East Sussex since January.
- Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp alleged the government is "shunting people from hotels into residential apartments to hide what is going on," arguing these apartments are "not available for young people struggling to get on the housing ladder."
- Ministers have pledged to end hotel use for asylum seekers by the next election, with the Home Office announcing that further closures will be announced soon.
