Rail Fares to Go up by 4.7% Next Year to Help Pay for New Trains - DutchNews.nl
NS says the higher prices will fund new trains and rising costs as it expands advance discounts and keeps child fares unchanged.
- On Tuesday, Dutch national train operator NS announced it will raise fares by almost 5% on average in 2027. Management board member Daan Schut stated the increase is necessary "to purchase new, comfortable trains, pay for rising costs and keep investing in good services."
- Fares have increased by around 6.5% annually for the last two years, following a 1.5% rise in 2023 when inflation hit 10%. In 2024, the government prevented further hikes with a €120 million cash injection to freeze prices.
- To offset higher costs, NS will increase the maximum reduction on PrijsTijd deals from 60% to 80% next year. Additionally, the minimum fare for short journeys rises to €3.10, while the high-speed supplement between Schiphol and Rotterdam increases by 20 cents to €3.40.
- Rail passenger organisation Rover criticized these above-inflation price hikes. They pointed to the success of the discounted summer subscription, which allowed off-peak travel for €49 monthly, as evidence that passengers will choose train travel if prices remain affordable.
- Regarding other fares, the Railrunner for children remains frozen at €2.50. While NS recorded a net gain of €380 million in 2025, the company noted this profit largely stemmed from a one-time recalculation of access charges during the pandemic.
