Novo, Orbis sign up to $1.4 billion deal to develop oral drugs

- On Thursday, Danish drugmaker Novo Nordisk signed a deal with Orbis Medicines worth up to $1.4 billion to discover multiple macrocycles with the "potential to replace injectable medicines," Orbis said.
- Novo is pursuing Biologic drugs to improve patient convenience, as current options like subcutaneous pens are burdensome; the company seeks to regain momentum after losing obesity and diabetes leadership to Eli Lilly.
- Orbis CEO Morten Graugaard said their AI-enabled platform designs molecules "that are both orally bioavailable and capable of modulating challenging intra- and extracellular targets," achieving up to 18% oral bioavailability in preclinical studies.
- The deal includes upfront and milestone payments to Orbis, as well as tiered royalties on future product sales; Novo will also make a strategic investment in the privately held company.
- This partnership follows recent industry successes such as Merck's approval of Lipfendra, while Novo undergoes a corporate reboot dropping "Nordisk" from its name and investing heavily in AI tools.
