Cull Caution Urged After City Beach Shark Attack
Officials said the woman suffered serious arm and leg injuries as authorities closed eastern suburbs beaches and weighed shark nets, drones and tagging.
On Saturday at 11am, a woman in her 30s was critically injured after being attacked by a large shark about 20-30 metres from shore at Sydney's Coogee Beach. Lifeguards rescued her and she was airlifted to hospital.
Following the attack, Randwick City Council closed Coogee, Clovelly, and Maroubra beaches for 24 hours, with Bondi, Bronte, and Tamarama also shut as a precaution. The incident has reignited calls for shark culls.
Independent MP Rod Roberts and opposition leader Kellie Sloane have called for shark culls to ensure community safety. Sloane said, "We need to put humans ahead of sharks and nothing should be off the table."
NSW Agriculture Minister Tara Moriarty has not ruled out culling, telling reporters, "Nothing is off the table in terms of how we keep the community safe." Shark nets will be installed on September 1.
Researchers Rebecca Olive and Brianna Le Brusque questioned the scientific effectiveness of culling as a safety measure, while Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries shark programs leader Marcel Green called the attack "unique and different.
