Holmes Norton scammed in her home by fake cleaning crew, police say

  • On Thursday, multiple people claiming to be heating, ventilation, and air conditioning maintenance workers entered Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton’s 9th Street SE home and billed her credit card $4,362 for services not performed.
  • Having previously been rebuffed in August and September, the same solicitors posing as heating, ventilation, and air conditioning maintenance workers claimed a cleaning crew to gain entry to Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton's residence.
  • Security footage reviewed by Norton’s team alerted Jaqueline Pelt, longtime friend and campaign treasurer, who noticed the suspicious visit and police reports described Norton, 88, as in the early stages of dementia.
  • D.C. police opened a felony fraud investigation and made no arrests Thursday; the credit card company canceled charges and warned Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton’s card and license could be compromised, with U.S. Capitol Police also responding.
  • Norton has indicated she plans to run for reelection next year despite recent months of scrutiny, while Donna Brazile wrote, `After doing so much for D.C. for so long, it’s understandable that she wants to remain in Congress. Public service is her life.
