Northwestern center Jackson Carsello gets injunction restoring eligibility for 2026 season
The injunction gives Carsello an extra season after the NCAA said his 2021 season should count as his redshirt year.
On Monday, Cook County Circuit Judge Neil Cohen granted Northwestern center Jackson Carsello a preliminary injunction, restoring his eligibility for the 2026 football season after the NCAA denied his waiver request.
The NCAA initially denied Carsello's waiver, arguing his 2021 season should have counted as his redshirt year, while Carsello contested this, citing a 2021 ankle injury that prevented him from playing despite practicing with the team.
"Carsello didn't impose a high-ankle sprain on himself," Judge Cohen said in his ruling, while the center played 32 games over three seasons, including 13 starts in 2025.
Northwestern celebrated the ruling on social media by posting, "He's back," with a video of Carsello, who returns as a starter under new offensive coordinator Chip Kelly.
Carsello is the latest athlete to receive a court injunction this fall, joining Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss, Oklahoma linebacker Owen Heinecke, and Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby in overturning NCAA decisions.
