Noem Blames NYC Sanctuary City Policy for Border Patrol Officer Shooting
NEW YORK CITY, JUL 21 – Homeland Security blames sanctuary city and bail reform policies for release of criminal illegal immigrants involved in attempted robbery and shooting of off-duty CBP officer.
- On Sunday, July 20, 2025, an off-duty Customs and Border Protection officer was shot in Fort Washington Park in Manhattan during a robbery attempt by 21-year-old Miguel Francisco Mora Nunez.
- Miguel Francisco Mora Nunez re-entered the U.S. in April 2023, received a deportation order on November 6th, but sanctuary city laws prevented his detention.
- The suspect shot the officer in the face and forearm during the robbery, the officer returned fire and wounded him, and he was arrested at a hospital shortly after arriving.
- President Donald Trump called the suspect an ‘Illegal Alien Monster freed into the Country under Joe Biden,’ while Noem blamed sanctuary policies, and Homan vowed to ‘flood the zone,’ reflecting political backlash.
- With new funding, the administration plans to expand enforcement and deportations, as Tom Homan pledges to surge ICE to sanctuary cities and “flood the zone,” and Congress earlier this month approved over $170 billion to expand enforcement, detention, and deportation efforts.
