Study Debunks COVID-19 Vaccine-Sudden Death Myths
A study found 57.2% of sudden deaths in young adults were due to coronary artery disease, with no significant link to COVID-19 vaccination, AIIMS researchers said.
- A year-long autopsy study at AIIMS, New Delhi found no scientific evidence linking COVID-19 vaccination status to sudden deaths in young adults, publishing results in the Indian Journal of Medical Research.
- Amid circulating claims about vaccines, researchers launched the study to test misleading claims linking COVID-19 vaccines to sudden deaths and to inform targeted public-health interventions, Dr Sudheer Arava said.
- Each case underwent verbal autopsy, post-mortem imaging, conventional autopsy and histopathology with causes assigned by a multidisciplinary autopsy and pathology team at AIIMS Pathology and Forensic Medicine departments, excluding trauma, suicide, homicide and drug abuse.
- The study identified coronary artery disease as the principal driver of young sudden deaths, with cardiovascular causes accounting for most deaths and young adults constituting 57.2 per cent .
- Findings reinforce vaccine-safety messages and evidence-based guidance, as the study found no statistically significant association between COVID-19 vaccination and sudden deaths, while respiratory causes and unexplained deaths need further investigation.
