Nine of the largest pharma companies ink deals with Trump to lower drug prices
- On Friday, nine large U.S. and European drugmakers signed voluntary deals with President Donald Trump, who said Johnson & Johnson will join next week.
- Reviving the policy, the administration signed an executive order on May 12, 2025, aiming to cut drug costs by 30% to 80% and sent July letters to 17 drugmakers urging price cuts to `end global freeloading`.
- A 2024 RAND Corporation study found U.S. prescription drug prices are nearly three times higher than overseas, with branded drugs more than four times higher.
- Earlier this year the administration secured discounts from Eli Lilly, Novo Nordisk, Pfizer, AstraZeneca and EMD Serono in exchange for exemptions and fast-tracked reviews, while trade association PhRMA blamed pharmacy benefit managers and criticized most-favored-nation pricing.
- Because the U.S. is the largest market for many firms, the administration said half of the 10 largest European pharmaceutical companies earn most sales in the U.S., affecting global pricing.
