‘Nightmare bacteria’ cases are increasing in the US

  • A 2025 CDC report revealed that cases of infections caused by drug-resistant bacteria known as "nightmare bacteria" increased by nearly 70% in the U.S. from 2019 to 2023.
  • This increase mainly resulted from bacteria carrying the NDM gene, which makes strains resistant to most antibiotics, including carbapenems.
  • Data collected in 2023 from 29 U.S. states conducting specialized testing revealed 4,341 cases of carbapenem-resistant bacterial infections, including 1,831 attributed to the NDM type, which presents few effective treatment options.
  • Emory researcher David Weiss expressed serious concern about the increasing presence of NDM bacteria in the United States, emphasizing the threat they pose and the challenge in treating infections. Additionally, the true number of cases is believed to be higher than reported due to incomplete testing and reporting in many states.
  • The CDC urges stronger surveillance, infection control, antibiotic stewardship, and investment in new treatments to limit community spread and worsening resistance.
