Nigeria: Jonathan Bids Farewell to Ex-Sierra Leone President After 2 Years in Nigeria
The former president returned after treason charges were dropped, following more than two years in Nigeria and a homecoming welcomed by officials.
- On Sunday, former Sierra Leone President Ernest Bai Koroma returned to Freetown after spending more than two years in Nigeria. He arrived at the international airport accompanied by former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo and Nigerian Foreign Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu.
- Koroma fled to Nigeria in 2024 after facing treason charges related to a 2023 army uprising that killed 21 people. Sierra Leonean authorities dropped the charges in July, clearing his path to return home.
- Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan saw Koroma off on Sunday, describing Nigeria as his "home away from home" during the exile. Jonathan expressed hope the return would mark "renewed hope and reconciliation" for Sierra Leone.
- Upon arrival, Koroma was welcomed by Foreign Minister Mohamed Rahman Swarray and officials from the opposition All People's Congress. "Today I have come back home and I'm happy," Koroma told journalists, smiling.
- His homecoming precedes presidential elections scheduled for 2028. Koroma previously visited Sierra Leone in July for an Economic Community of West African States summit at the invitation of President Julius Maada Bio.
