The Ministry of Education revised entry rules to remove math as mandatory for arts and humanities, aiming to expand access while maintaining academic standards nationwide.
- On Tuesday, Folasade Boriowo, spokesperson for the Ministry of Education, announced SSCE mathematics credit is no longer required for admission into arts and humanities courses.
- Historically, arts and humanities applicants needed five credit passes including mathematics and English, but the National Guidelines for Entry Requirements into Nigerian Tertiary Institutions aim to remove barriers to admission while maintaining standards.
- Universities require a minimum of five credit passes including English obtained in not more than two sittings, while Colleges of Education require four credit passes with English mandatory for Arts and Social Science.
- Math remains mandatory only for Science, Technology and Social Science courses, while polytechnics maintain four credit passes at ND and five including math at HND levels.
- The guidelines apply nationwide to universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, and Innovation Enterprise Academies, with Tunji Alausa, Minister of Education, describing the reform as expanding tertiary access.
