NIA arrests Kolkata resident for spying for Pakistan Intelligence Officers

Investigators say he was lured with money and a promise of Pakistani citizenship and used OTPs to help activate WhatsApp accounts for handlers.

  • On Wednesday, the National Investigation Agency arrested Kolkata resident Zafar Riaz, accused of passing confidential security information to Pakistan Intelligence Officers as part of an anti-India conspiracy.
  • Riaz traveled frequently between India and Pakistan since 2005, when PIOs cultivated him during visits, allegedly offering "in lieu of financial inducements and the promise of Pakistani citizenship."
  • Investigators alleged Riaz provided One-Time Passwords for mobile numbers to activate WhatsApp accounts for covert use, and he was previously convicted in a separate espionage case.
  • These WhatsApp accounts facilitated secret communications with Central Reserve Police Force Assistant Sub Inspector Moti Ram Jat, another accused also suspected of passing security information to PIOs.
  • Officials charged Riaz under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Official Secrets Act, and the Unlawful Activities Act, as the NIA continues investigating the broader espionage network.
