Fire Service Deals with 303 Emergency Calls as Eleventh Night Bonfires Are Lit
NIFRS said 54 of the calls were bonfire-related, while fires in Greenisland and Belfast destroyed two homes and damaged two others.
The Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service received 303 emergency calls between 6 pm on July 11 and 2 am on July 12, attending 151 operational incidents during Eleventh Night celebrations across Northern Ireland.
Traditional bonfires lit across Northern Ireland create one of the busiest evenings of the year for emergency crews, ahead of the Orange Order's July 12 parades marking the 334th anniversary of the Battle of the Boyne.
In Greenisland, Carrickfergus, 45 firefighters battled a blaze destroying two homes and damaging two others, deploying 6 pumping appliances and an aerial ladder to the scene.
Bonfire spread caused a garage fire on Milner Street in Belfast, while hostile crowds forced firefighters to withdraw from a bonfire site in Cookstown.
Area Commander Dermot Rooney thanked personnel for their professionalism while urging public safety as further bonfires remain planned throughout the remainder of the bank holiday weekend.
