NHS Trust Sacks Staff over Accessing Attacks Victims' Records

NUH also issued 14 written warnings as it investigates further improper access to records of surviving victims.

  • On Thursday, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust confirmed it dismissed 11 staff members for inappropriately accessing medical records of victims Barnaby Webber, Grace O'Malley-Kumar, and Ian Coates.
  • Investigations began in early 2025 after staff were found to have accessed victim records without legitimate reason; the inquiry covers at least 150 staff members, with bereaved families accusing many of 'abhorrent voyeurism.'
  • Beyond dismissals, NUH issued 12 final written warnings and two first written warnings; Emma Webber, Barnaby's mother, said it was "shocking" that 150 staff accessed records and "the scale of misconduct" may escalate further.
  • NUH will consult with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and General Medical Council , which have powers to strike staff off medical registers, and has informed Nottinghamshire Police and the Information Commissioner's Office .
  • Further investigations remain ongoing into access to records of surviving victims Wayne Birkett, Sharon Miller, and Marcin Gawronski, as a public statutory inquiry into the killings continues with NUH Medical Director Dr Manjeet Shehmar expected to testify next week.
