NHS issues urgent appeal for blood donors as fears grow over sickle cell treatment

Health experts say an estimated 16,000 additional volunteers are needed

There’s a call for more blood donors to treat patients with sickle cell disease.

NHS Blood and Transplant says a further 16,000 are needed, with the health service able to meet just half the current demand. NHS Blood and Transplant has a blood donor centre in Twickenham, where donations can help patients with the disease. The inherited blood disorder is particularly common in people with an African or Caribbean family background.
