Police at Newark airport rescue 2-year-old from luggage system, X-ray machine
- On Wednesday evening around 6:30 p.m., a 2-year-old child unexpectedly stepped onto a baggage conveyor system in Terminal A at Newark Airport.
- While the child's mother was arranging a new flight at the JetBlue service desk on the departures level, the child wandered behind a kiosk, triggering the incident.
- Two Port Authority Police officers promptly boarded the moving conveyor belt and tracked the toddler through the complex network of belts, eventually locating the unharmed child in the checked baggage area on the lower level after approximately four minutes.
- According to the Port Authority Police Benevolent Association, officers quickly recognized the risk to the toddler and immediately got onto the luggage conveyor. Within approximately four minutes, they found the child who was moving toward the x-ray scanner.
- The child was rescued just before entering the X-ray screening area, was unharmed, and the family declined medical treatment, while EMS was requested as a precaution, highlighting the officers' swift and effective response.
