New York City Council unanimously elects Julie Menin as next speaker
Julie Menin, elected unanimously, will lead New York City Council during major policy debates and transition with a focus on affordability and coalition-building, the council said.
- On Tuesday, the New York City Council unanimously elected Councilmember Julie Menin 51-0 at its first meeting of 2026, making her the body's first Jewish speaker; Menin said, `I am deeply honored and humbled that my City Council colleagues have elected me as Speaker`.
- Menin built her victory through a broad coalition, securing backing from at least 35 colleagues by late November after months of dealmaking involving unions and members of Congress, while Crystal Hudson withdrew and pledged support.
- An attorney and former small-business owner, Menin has spent more than two decades in public service, served as commissioner and New York City Census director, sponsored more than 18 bills, and led NYC Kids RISE for more than 280,000 public school students.
- Soon, Menin and Zohran Mamdani will begin negotiating this year's city budget after the mayor's preliminary spending proposal due at the end of January, with public safety and the $1 billion Department of Community Safety as key issues.
- Projections show looming fiscal pressure starting July 1 as Julie Menin's elevation coincides with Zohran Mamdani's mayoralty, marking the city's first Jewish speaker and first Muslim mayor.
