5th New Shark Species Discovered Inside Mammoth Cave
MAMMOTH CAVE NATIONAL PARK, JUL 24 – Researchers identified Macadens olsoni, a small shark with curved teeth for crushing prey, among over 40 fossil shark species discovered in recent months at Mammoth Cave.
- On Thursday, Mammoth Cave National Park announced the discovery of Macadens olsoni at the park.
- More than 40 fossil shark species were identified in the past 10 months, Mammoth Cave National Park officials said, as researchers pursued extensive fossil studies.
- Less than one foot long, likely fed on mollusks and worms, and park officials said it has a unique curved row of teeth for crushing small sea creatures.
- Named in honor of Mammoth Cave and Rickard Olson, while the discovery highlights the park's history with five shark species new to science was noted.
