On December 20, 2022, a temporary suspension was introduced on the possibility of applying for a license for onshore aquaculture for salmon, trout and rainbow trout. New regulations now lift that suspension.

After more than two years of suspension of applications, the government is now reopening new permits for land-based fish farming. At the same time, biosecurity requirements are being tightened and the distinction between marine and land-based operations is being clarified.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries has today adopted amendments to the Salmon Allocation Regulations and the Aquabiosecurity Regulations. The amendments clarify the conditions for the location of facilities, so that the boundary between what is considered to be on land and at sea becomes clearer.
