‘Never seen anything like it’: B.C. Conservative exodus continues, with more defections expected
Five MLAs have left the caucus in less than two weeks, and some are planning a new centrist party as confidence in Kerry-Lynne Findlay erodes.
- On Wednesday, Courtenay-Comox MLA Brennan Day quit the B.C. Conservative caucus, becoming the fifth legislator to depart in less than two weeks as the party fractures under new Leader Kerry-Lynne Findlay.
- Day cited a lack of confidence in Findlay's "judgment, conduct, and ethical standards," criticizing the people she has "chosen to surround herself" with. He stated he entered politics to serve his constituency over party.
- The exit follows resignations by MLA Teresa Wat on Wednesday, Rosalyn Bird on Tuesday, and Ian Paton on Monday, while Findlay fired caucus operations director Apollo Chung on Wednesday. Peter Milobar left earlier this month.
- Paton and Milobar announced intentions to form a new "centrist" political party, while Day and other defectors plan to sit as Independents. Findlay is campaigning for an Abbotsford-Mission seat after MLA Reann Gasper stepped down.
- Mario Canseco, president of Research Co., suggests legislators doubt Findlay can lead them to victory. The legislative assembly currently includes 48 NDP MLAs, 39 Conservatives, and 10 Independents.
