Netherlands won't join 2027 Eurovision Song Contest as Israel protest continues

NPO said it could not secure enough support for a Dutch entry, but NOS will still air the contest with Dutch commentary.

  • On Tuesday, broadcaster association NPO announced the Netherlands will withdraw from the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest, reversing a September decision to return and citing concerns over Israel's participation.
  • Opposition grew after around 400 NPO employees sent a letter opposing participation, echoing the 2026 boycott by the Netherlands, Iceland, Spain, Ireland, and Slovenia over Israel's military actions in Gaza and the Middle East.
  • NPO Chair Jet de Ranitz stated the organization could not secure a broadcaster willing to facilitate a Dutch entry, noting they "were unable to find a suitable format" for participation.
  • Eurovision Song Contest Director Martin Green said he was "deeply sorry" regarding the withdrawal, adding organizers "respect the strength of feeling behind it," while AVROTROS announced in August it would also sit out 2027.
  • The 71st Eurovision Song Contest will take place in Burgas, Bulgaria, from May 11 to 15, 2027, and NPO confirmed the country will still air the competition, watched by 130 million viewers.
