Dutch Military to Get a GlobalEye Radar Plane
The aircraft will give Dutch crews access to a joint pool with Sweden and help replace NATO’s outdated AWACS fleet.
- On Thursday, September 10, 2026, the Netherlands signed a Letter of Intent with Sweden to acquire one Saab GlobalEye airborne early warning and control aircraft, the Dutch Ministry of Defense and Saab announced.
- During the July 7, 2026, NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, eleven allies including the Netherlands and Sweden agreed to procure GlobalEye as the alliance's new AWACS.
- Dutch crews gain access to Swedish aircraft in 2028, three years before the 2031 delivery of their own plane; the two countries plan to share a joint pool for increased availability.
- Replacing the outdated NATO Boeing E-3A Sentry AWACS fleet, a national aircraft allows the Dutch to decide more independently where and when the system is deployed, the ministry said.
- Saab CEO Micael Johansson said the system provides "enhanced situational awareness and early warning capabilities across multiple domains," while strengthening NATO's ability to operate in an increasingly complex security environment.
