Nestle's low-fat dairy whitener sample found 'unsafe' in India, says regulator
The regulator said a laboratory found the product substandard and unsafe, and it issued a notice to Bharat Hotels Ltd.
On Saturday, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India declared a sample of Nestle India 'low-fat dairy whitener' collected from The Lalit in New Delhi 'unsafe and substandard.'
Following the laboratory analysis, the FSSAI directed Bharat Hotels Ltd to immediately stop selling the product and issued a formal notice for non-compliance under the FSS Act.
Defending the product, Nestle India stated it is 'safe to consume' and attributed elevated phosphorus to naturally occurring levels in milk-based ingredients, not added phosphorus.
In September, the FSSAI identified a Nestle baby food sample as 'substandard,' prompting ongoing legal measures against the Swiss food giant in one of its major growth markets.
While Nestle engages with authorities sharing product data, The Lalit did not respond to requests for comment regarding the incident at its Connaught Place location.
