Electricity: NERC Approves Special Compensation for Band A Customers

NERC said prepaid customers will get token credits and postpaid customers bill adjustments after generation shortages cut service levels for some feeders.

  • On Thursday, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission approved a special compensation package for eligible Band A customers affected by power supply shortfalls between February and March 2026.
  • Generation shortfalls stemmed from inadequate gas supply and vandalism of critical infrastructure, factors NERC noted were beyond the control of Distribution Companies during the period.
  • Eligible customers will receive compensation equivalent to 20 per cent of the approved February 2026 energy cap, with prepaid customers receiving token credits and postpaid customers receiving bill adjustments.
  • NERC directed Distribution Companies to complete February compensation by May 31, 2026, and March shortfalls by June 30, 2026, while barring DisCos from offsetting credits against existing customer debts.
  • Customers on Band A feeders recording average daily supply between 18 and 20 hours remain under the existing Addendum framework, while feeders receiving less than 18 hours will not be downgraded.
