Nepal PM Shah Prioritises Disaster Early Warning Systems After Devastating Bhotekoshi Floods
Shah said Nepal will expand preparedness and response after floods killed 1,410 people and left more than 6,100 missing, officials said.
- On Saturday, Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah announced that disaster early warning systems will be implemented as a top priority, addressing the nation on Constitution Day with emphasis on risk reduction and preparedness.
- The announcement follows devastating floods in the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli River basins on August 26, triggered by an ice-rock avalanche near the Nepal-Tibet border that devastated towns in northern and central Nepal.
- According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, 1,410 people died and over 6,100 remain missing, while rescue teams saved 13,756 individuals and the disaster damaged 48 suspension bridges and 31 motorable bridges.
- The government released funds from the Prime Minister's Relief Fund, which collected over NPR 7 billion, while the foreign ministry estimates the reconstruction bill will reach $4.78 bn with international support from India and China.
- Citing the Digital Governance Action Plan, Shah pledged to integrate artificial intelligence and digital technology into the economy, while telecommunications services have been restored across 95 per cent of affected areas as recovery continues.
