Nigeria: Govt Probes Temu Over Alleged Violation of Data Protection Law
The National Data Protection Commission probes Temu for possible breaches including excessive data collection and unclear privacy policies affecting 12.7 million Nigerians, the NDPC said.
- On Monday, the Federal Government ordered an investigation into Temu's data processing, which preliminary checks show involves 12.7 million data subjects in Nigeria and 70 million global daily users.
- The NDPC said the probe was prompted by concerns over online surveillance, cross‑border data transfer, accountability, data minimisation, transparency and duty of care.
- Investigators are checking whether Temu's app permissions match buying and shipping needs, with NDPC staff warning that asking for `Point A` but recording `Points B through Z` breaches data minimisation.
- The NDPC warned that processors may be liable if they do not verify compliance with the NDP Act, and Nigerian users have the right to know how their data is used, shared, and stored.
- As cross‑border transfers are scrutinised, regulators flagged national security and privacy concerns over the `invisible trail` of personal data by millions of Nigerian consumers trading on international e‑commerce platforms.
