In the future, naturalisation in Germany will be possible after at least five years. The Bundestag voted for the abolition of the possibility for particularly well-integrated foreigners to get the German passport after three years.
Very well integrated foreigners can no longer be naturalized after three years. A law submitted by Interior Minister Dobrindt was also passed with votes of the SPD – which once voted in favour of the opposite.
The fact that immigrants received a German passport after three years has never fit the then opposition parties CDU and CSU. Now they are in government and undo the traffic light law.
In the future, immigrants will have to live in the country for five years before they receive a German passport: the Bundestag will undo the law introduced by the traffic lights. The Cabinet decides on police law with a new drone pass.
