NA passes bill to keep lawmakers’ assets secret for up to a year
The bill allows lawmakers to keep asset disclosures confidential for up to one year to protect safety, following suspension of 159 members for non-submission, Election Commission said.
- The National Assembly of Pakistan approved the Elections Amendment Bill, 2026 after Pakistan Peoples Party lawmaker Shazia Atta Marri moved it in the lower house.
- The move follows ECP action that suspended 159 lawmakers a week earlier; members of the National Assembly, Senate and provincial assemblies must file by December 31.
- The bill adds a proviso to Section 138 allowing the speaker or Senate chairman, on application and for documented reasons, to withhold asset declarations for up to one year if submitted confidentially to the ECP.
- The measure still needs Senate approval and presidential assent, while Section 138 of the Elections Act mandates the Election Commission of Pakistan to publish declarations in the official gazette.
- Coming after mass suspensions, the change could limit public access to asset declarations since Section 138 requires the Election Commission of Pakistan to publish filings, raising oversight concerns.
