Abdul El-Sayed Emphasizes Muslim Faith After Trump Calls Him a ‘Jihadist’
El-Sayed says attacks on his Arabic name and Muslim faith will not force him to hide his identity.
On Monday, Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed released a campaign ad highlighting his Muslim faith to connect with voters across Michigan as the race tightens.
President Donald Trump has repeatedly targeted the candidate, baselessly calling him "a jihadist" and claiming El-Sayed "is a member of the Muslim Brotherhood" while mocking his name as "Mohamed."
Former Michigan Democratic Party chair Lon Johnson accused El-Sayed of "extremism" and called on Democrats to "leave the Senate race blank," representing internal party friction over the candidate.
Responding to attacks, El-Sayed stated, "He knows my name is Abdul," arguing opponents use his faith to distract from policy struggles affecting groceries, healthcare, and costs.
With two weeks until Election Day, former Jersey City school board official Mussab Ali praised the ad, calling it an act of "courage" and noting it marks a historic moment.
