Elon Musk Lays Out Terafab AI Chip Project Plan
The project could start at $55 billion and reach $119 billion as SpaceX seeks to build chips for Tesla’s robotaxis and Optimus robot.
On Wednesday, Elon Musk's SpaceX and Tesla proposed a $55 billion semiconductor facility called Terafab in Texas, with total investment potentially reaching $119 billion if additional phases are completed.
Musk intends to secure in-house chip access for Tesla's self-driving systems and Optimus robots, reducing reliance on external suppliers like Samsung and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing.
Situated at Gibbons Creek Reservoir in Grimes County, the project awaits a June 3 vote by County Commissioners on a proposed property tax abatement agreement.
Morgan Stanley analysts estimated costs up to $45 billion, but the higher figures arrive as SpaceX prepares for a June IPO potentially valued at $1.75 trillion.
Although partnering with Intel, SpaceX acknowledged no assurance of meeting timelines, citing challenges in securing specialized technical talent required for the complex facility.
